Our Review of the BOB Yak bicycle cargo trailer

The Yak bicycle cargo trailer was BOB's original "Beast of Burden" - and it's a packhorse! Back in 1994, the engineers at BOB made the Yak to be a versatile bicycle cargo trailer for serious bikers - and 14 years later, it's still going, stronger than ever. The lightweight (but heavy-duty) chromoly construction ensures strength and durability, and lets you carry up to 70 pounds of gear - whether it's for touring, commuting, or riding single-track.

The trailer is easy to attach, and the Yak's single wheel tracks directly behind your bike's rear wheel - preventing it from becoming a hazard in any situation. The Yak's open frame design can adapt to many types of cargo, and the trailer is easy to attach to and detach from your bicycle, thanks to the patented quick-release hitch.

Model differences:

BOB Yak - Yak trailer Only (no Dry Sak)
BOB Yak Plus - includes Dry Sak
BOB Yak 28 - extra long fork - originally designed for European bikes with 28 " wheels. Also works well with for bikes with wrap-around fenders with reflectors.
BOB Yak 28 Plus - All the features of the normal Yak 28, but Dry Sak is also included.
BOB Yak Santana - extra wide fork - Designed to be used on Santana Tandems or tandems with 160mm dropout spacing.

B.O.B. Yak Trailer

The "Beast of Burden" Yak trailer is a wonderful trailer for anyone wanting to transport gear. I purchased my Yak in the spring of 1999 and it has served me well. With no problems at all with the trailer other than flats and lost pins. The pins used to secure the tailer to the bike is the only weak link. Carry spares they are cheap and the trailer will not work without them. I tossed my panniers after the first trip with the trailer. You hardly notice it is behind you and it tracks well behind you on narrow curvy trails. The load sits low secure on off camber trails. I have the BOB Nutz on my cruiser and the BOB QR on the mountain bikes as well as the tandem when me and the wife take off for a picnic. This the best trailer (and design) on the market back in 1999 and still today. I would buy another one in a heart beat if this one every fails me.

I'm very happy with this trailer. Not only does it hold to its reputation,it is very well built, very easy to hook up,and most impressive to me is the way that it rides, I cant even tell that is back there. This is my first BOB purchase and certainly not my last, and where I live its the only one I've seen. Everywhere I ride, I'm always asked where did you get that awesome trailer, and I say bicycletrailers.com !

Why I like this trailer

Reviewer: Lin Baker , Vancouver, WA Date: October 02, 2007
I purchased two trailers for my two son's trip across the country. While they prepared to go I watch them attach the trailers to their bikes. They went on like a dream and we all cheered and rejoiced. I have pictures of it all and especially some of them riding off towards their new life in the SW. They were thrilled and since I paid for them....well so was I! Thank you BOB for a quality product that they could rely upon to get them there safely and in style.

bob yak trailer

I used my trailer when touring Thialand and Cambodia, apart from one accident involving my goylefriend[snort snort]who was towing the trailer and one huge car[little women in big car sydrome can't see over the dash board]had no problems with it at all and considering what tried to run over it,the trailer is incredibly strong(four guys two each side to hold down over entrance step to hotel and me bouncing up and down trying to straighten twisted wheel fork. The other thing I liked about the trailer over it's chineese made copy which I was towing, the bag was easy to remove, after my experience out of the two I would definately go for the bob.

practical and versatile

I use this trailer with my MTB hard-tail. It's real EZ to hook up and take off. When it's empty I barely even notice it's there. Solid design and smart engineering;practical. Love the way it tracks right behind my bike, even when squeezing thru a narrow, twisty space. Right now I use it mostly for grocery shopping (getting to the store involves some off-roading for me),but have also used it to scrounge small trees in the woods for landscaping my property (hauling tools is no problem). The bungee is a little disappointing, but no biggie. I also wish it could stand independently. I plan to do some touring in the future-I'm sure it'll serve me well.

so far, from what little time i,ve spent with it, it seems to be working fine. I suppose i'll know just how good it is after i bike across the nation. The assembly was not difficult, and the frame and overall structure seems sound and no sharp edges to snag cargo and rip tarps.

Not Perfect But Works Better Than Anything Else Out There

Bought a BOB YAK to go bike-packing and for various utility uses. It's a great trailer once you accept its (and your) limitations, and learn to live with or work around its little idiosyncrasies. Hooking up a loaded trailer can be tricky- I just started doing it with bike and trailer on their side. I know they expect you to load the bag independently of the trailer, but it's really hard to get a fully loaded bag in or out of the trailer, and you can fit a LOT more stuff in when you load it while in the trailer. They should also have a handle or something you can lock in the trailer yoke to facilitate rolling a loaded trailer around during transfers requiring unhitching the trailer, i.e., trains, ferries, etc.

BOB Yak Plus

Reviewer: Robert Cooley , Swanton, OH Date: July 16, 2006
The manufacturer had stated a warning about the unstability of the trailer when biking but I have found it to be very smooth in operation and have enjoyed it very much for my commute to work each morning. For an excersise note: it did provide a better workout with the extra luggage because of the cargo wieght that I towed. In review, I do not regret spending the money for the purchase. I believe that it was worth every dollar.
