Our Review of the Burley Solo bike trailer

The Burley Solo bicycle trailer is the lighter, single seat version of the Burley D'Lite  child trailer. This is Burley's only solo seat bicycle trailer, perfect for active families with one child. Go from rolling hills to city streets with your child in tow.

Standout Features:

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Push button wheels for quick removal and storage
  • Quick Tow Arm Mount for easy, fast installation on your bicycle
  • Roomy cargo space - haul up to two bags of groceries!
  • An ultra-padded seat for your child

Benefits for You: Weighing just 21 lbs, this lightweight Burley bicycle trailer is easy to install, and its compact fold makes for even easier storage. When the time comes to fold the Solo, remove the 16" alloy wheels with the push of a button. A parking brake keeps the trailer in place on slopes.

Pedal to the farmers market and store your fresh finds in the Solo's roomy cargo space. For extra convenience, add the Burley Handlebar Console to your child trailer and keep your water bottle, keys and snacks close at hand.

Installation: Attaching the Solo to your bike is easy as pie with the included Tow Arm. Attach the Burley Hitch to your bike and then attach the Tow Arm using the pin. For quick-release axles, this requires no tools. For standard axles, you'll need a wrench.

The hitch included with your Burley trailer does not fit Breezer-style drop outs, but the Classic Hitch does, which is sold separately.

Compatibility: With the right accessories, your Burley Solo bicycle trailer can adapt to your active lifestyle.

Benefits for Baby: With a 75 lb weight limit, the Solo's spacious interior has seating for one child, and space for cargo. A comfortable deluxe seat pad and padded shoulder harness keeps your little one happy on long rides. The seat also reclines for added comfort. The helmet pocket prevents neck kinks. Put little treats and toys in the interior kid pocket.

Keep your precious passenger's delicate skin protected on sunny days with UV protective tinted window. A 2-in-1 weather cover keeps the cabin dry during rain showers. For infants 3-12 months, get the Burley Baby Snuggler, which keeps babies safe while out and about with your Burley child trailer.

Safety:

  • Safety Flag
  • 5-point harness
  • Reflective material
  • Front, rear and wheel reflectors

Comparison: If you love all the features of the Solo, but would rather invest in a bike trailer to accommodate two children (just in case), check out the Burley D'Lite. The D'Lite is Burley's top-of-the-line child trailer and fits up to 2 children, with a total weight capacity of 100 lbs. The D'Lite also features an elastomer suspension system to ensure a smooth ride, and extra cargo space.

2007 Solo

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Date: July 19, 2010
We checked out a number of brands of bike trailers, including Chariot, Burley, MEC, and Costco brand. The last two seemed comparatively cheaper than the first two, but for good reason -- you get what you pay for and so we focussed on Burley and Chariot. Because we have one kid we opted for a single. When comparing the two brands it became apparent that the Burley Solo offered the best space/utility/cost between the two brands. Best of all, we found a used three-year old Solo (2007) which is very close to the 2010 model. We've only had it out for one jaunt but have been very pleased with the design, ride, etc. Our kid fell asleep almost immediately any time we rode. Burley seems to have addressed the pinching straps issue noted in earlier (2006) models with the addition of a 'bib'. However, that is a little bit of pain to have to keep adjusting. A surprisingly large storage area is located behind the kid and is quite useful. The unit is very light and loaded up I can haul it on a paved trail at pretty much the maximum speed I can get to on my mountain bike and it appears very stable. There's some sort of elastic polymer piece between the hitch and your bike axle that allows your bike to fall over without flipping you kid out of the trailer. It works very well but I have to wonder how long it will last before it snaps. The instructions indicate that the unit should not be used below 0ºC -- what the! We live at 54º latitude and it can get that cold overnight sometimes in the summer! Why not design an articulating metal knuckle like on drive shafts? We'll see how durable that part is -- I'll check the local dealer to see if there are upgrades. All in all, a great little trailer we three cannot wait to use again.

Well Designed Bike Trailer

Reviewer: Anonymous , Corvallis, OR Date: April 01, 2008
Extremely well designed trailer (I have 2008 version), very thoughtfully designed for full functionality. Suspension system. Comfortable for child. Straps keep them securely in place. "Trunk" in rear can fit a backpack or purse or bag of groceries. Easily attaches to bike with hitch. Very smooth ride. I love the narrower width of the Solo. Having great gear like this makes it such a pleasure to bicycle. I am biking my son to school 4 miles each way and we love every minute. My only regret is I didn't buy it 8 years ago for my older son.
