Our Review of the Chariot Cabriolet bike trailer

Enhancements for the 2007 Chariot Cabriolet:

  • VersaWing 2.0: enhanced front attachment bracket for new Chariot stroller wheels
  • Improved front air vents for better in-seat air circulation

The Cabriolet is the Original Chariot bike trailer. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts who place an emphasis on cycling, the Chariot Cabriolet is a fantastic two-passenger bicycle trailer that converts easily to a jogging stroller, walking stroller, or hiking carrier. . . all by utilizing the same patented VersaWing 2.0 technology as other Chariot carriers like the Cougar 2, Corsaire XL, and CX 2. Built on an anodized aluminum frame, the Cabriolet is the lightest two-passenger Chariot carrier, and has the smallest folded dimensions of the bunch.

The CTS kits available for use with the Cabriolet use a newly designed hitch arm and VersaWing 2.0 technology that allows you switch quickly and easily from one trailer mode to another. The switch from trailer to walking stroller is especially easy, since the swiveling stroller wheels are stored right on the VersaWings.

Naturally, the Cabriolet comes with all the standard Chariot features: padded seats and harnesses, a well-ventilated cockpit for air-flow, and an included weather cover. Once your kids have outgrown, the Cabriolet (which should take a while) and optional Cargo Conversion Kit  transform the passenger carrier into a reinforced-floor cargo trailer perfectly suited for hauling groceries, supplies, or even the family pet

Bottom Line: The Cabriolet is just a bit smaller in than the Chariot Corsaire XL, and doesn't provide as much shoulder room, but has additional features (like storage space) that give the Cabriolet added value. All Chariot trailers are fully convertible, but provide more room and features as you move up the price spectrum.

The next step above the Cabriolet is the Cougar 2, then the roomy Corsaire XL, then the top-of-line CX2. If all you want a light and versatile bicycle trailer /stroller that will prove useful for a long time, the Cabriolet will suit your needs quite well. It's produced with the same high-standards of quality as other Chariot convertible bike trailers, and comes protected by a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

I'm the kind of person who does so much research before buying a product that I figured I should share what I found. I have 2.5 year old twins and originally bought the InSTEP Quick N EZ for $50 on craiglist. The intention was to see if a) my kids even liked riding in a trailer and b) I liked pulling one. The answer to both was yes and so after a year and a weekend filled with riding I decided to start looking. My requirements were: 1. wide and long comfortable seating for the kids where they could fall asleep without slumping over to much 2. a decent amount of storage space in the back 3. a bike trailer that would fit them for a while and then be useful for pulling cargo later on. The top contenders after all my research were: 1. The Chariot Cabriolet 2. The Burley d'Lite 3. WIKE Moonlite Double The Wike was out because I couldn't look at it anywhere and couldn't get myself to buy something that i hadn't seen yet. In reality, this looked like the best, but there you go. I looked at a friend's Burley d'Lite and was almost sold on that instantly: it has great storage space, plenty of space in the cockpit and was made of very high quality material. Something else we noticed is that the bike does not travel in the center of the trailer, but slightly to the right, so that the bike and trailer can remain close to the edge of the road. This seemed like a very wonderful product. For the Chariot, only their Classic series has any storage worth mentioning, and I didn't need any of the XC skiing, stroller options, so the Cabriolet made the most sense. This was the standard size and still within my price range. I ended up going with the Chariot, mainly because of a crossbar underneath the seat, behind the kid's knees. In the Instep trailer, the kids were always sagging towards each other, but this crossbar completely prevents that. The stability is fantastic. While parked, the bike has tipped over and the trailer didn't move at all. The storage is a bit smaller than the d'Lite due to the folding mechanism, but still perfect for stuff you would need for a picnic or to go swimming. Both this and the d'Lite have back padding to offset the helmets. The 20" wheels made the ride very smooth and much better than the Instep 16" wheels. The Chariot is also made with very sturdy construction and looks very stylish (not that this counts all THAT much.) The best thing is that my kids like riding in it and seem to want to ride it a lot, which is good for me. I ended up buying this from a local store because, again, I wanted to actually see the product. I hope this write-up helps you decide.

Wow! We are beyond pleased with this trailer! We have used it both behind the bike and as a jogger/stroller and it performs perfectly as both! My huband pulls it behind his bike with little or no effort and I am able to jog twice as far as with our other heavy jogger. It is set up wonderfully for any weather with a rain guard, UV protective tinted windows and sun shade. An added bonus is that the handle bar flips over to accomodate both my 6'4" husband and me at 5'5". The ride is smooth, light on the bumps and very comfortable for our son. He rolls along for hours and plays with his toys or comfortably naps when he's tired. There are pockets inside for his drinks, snacks and toys and a good amount of storage in the back for all our stuff. It folds almost flat for travel in the car and fits into our tiny trunk. WE LOVE IT!!
