Our Review of the Burley Piccolo 7-speed trailercycle

Get out on the trail, or just ride around the block while teaching your child the balance and control necessary for solo cycling with the Burley Piccolo TrailercycleBurley has thought of everything necessary to give your child the security and confidence that will turn them into the next Lance Armstrong: a 7-speed twist shifter, stable and snug in-line handling, and a safety flag and reflectors for maximum safety.

Parents love getting outside with their child and teaching them to ride when attaching the Piccolo Trailercycle is such a snap – Burley's patented ball-bearing guided hitch with a double locking mechanism easily clamps into place. Simply slide the lever, set the hitch plate on the rack, engage the safety pins, and tighten a knob. Assembling the trailercycle requires a wrench, but doesn't require hours of work.

Your child will enjoy a smooth ride thanks to a 20-inch wheel and a durable steel frame. The hitch sits perpendicular to the ground, which contributes to the Piccolo's superior handling and stability. Because the hitch is ball-bearing guided, the trailercycle won?t wobble around. The adjustable handle and seat post accommodate growth spurts.

Kids love learning to ride with mom or dad, especially when their ride is splash-free thanks to the front splash guard. The 7-speed twist shifter puts children in control, though it is better suited to older children with a good grasp of shifting. Consider the Burley Kazoo, which is single-speed, if you feel your child is too young or inexperienced for a shifter.

Bottom Line: The Burley Piccolo is a superior trailercycle. With shifting capabilities and a smooth ride, children build cycling confidence. The included Burley Moose Rack serves as a great way to carry cargo. Parents looking for a trailercycle that folds for easy storage in trunks should investigate the Chariot Catch 'Em.

Very good trailer bike

Reviewer: John Reynolds , Tallahassee, FL Date: June 19, 2009
After pricing and looking at trailer bikes by Trek, GIANT, etc., I decided to purchase the Burley Piccolo. I have used the more typical trailer bike that attaches to the seatpost, and I think Burley's system is significantly better. As others have noted, it is more stable and easy to put on and take off. Mine is attached to my commuter bike w/ 700c wheels. Great fit (had to trim the attachment bars that connect the rack to the frame with a hacksaw, but not a big deal). My daughter very much likes the bike and her pedaling makes a big difference going up hills. The overall quality is good; not outstanding -- it's not like the components on the Burley are top of the line Shimano. The frame is solid and not very heavy. The seat is okay, padded but again not top of the line. My 5-year-old has to have the seat on the lowest setting to be comfortable (meaning we'll be able to use it for a long time). Overall, very pleased...

Perfect!!!

I bought one of these for my 5 yr old daughter last year and she LOVES it. It is the perfect way to take a kid along for the ride! It is MUCH better than the seat post mounted trailers because it allows the lead bike to lean naturally into turns without being "torqued" by the extra weight.
